The Summit was opened by its host Branko Crvenkovski, the President of Macedonia, who said in his welcoming speech that the gatherings such as this one are good because they talk about the joint future and the certain countries’ internal capacity are insufficient for process management, i.e. the countries need EU.

Macedonian President Nikola Gruevski also addressed the participants of the meeting, and afterwards, as a special guest, Turkish President Abdullah Gull said these summits are important for enhancing relations and securing regional stability.
Slovenian President Danilo Turk, the current EU Chairman, underlined the importance of respecting human rights and particularly stressed out the issue whether EU would be able to manage collective policy and lead global negotiations. Human rights, according to the words of the Slovenian President, are the essence of philosophy and structure of the European Union.
Croatian President Stjepan Mesić said the final goal of every country in the region is the European Union and the countries need political and financial support within the European Union. Democracy is a historic challenge, a great test and must always be proved – the Croatian President emphasized.
Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin said the EU enlargement is important for stability and his country wants to rely on the European Union’s successful practice.
Czech President Vaclav Klaus believes that when it comes to the EU enlargement, no one should be left out, while Montenegrin President Filip Vujanović said Montenegro has a unique stance on joining EU but EU must ensure conditions for enlargement, i.e. other countries’ entrance. Hungarian President Laszlo Soly and Albanian President Bamir Topi said that strengthening of neighborly relations is important and integration is the future.

Today, after the end of the first plenary session, BiH Presidency Chairman Dr Haris Silajdžić visited Ohrid, the Plaosnik monastery with the Heads of States, and he also attended the concert organized for the Heads of States in the Saint Sofia church.

BiH Presidency Chairman Dr Haris Silajdžić is planned to hold bilateral meetings today in the afternoon and to attend the formal dinner for the Heads of States attending the Summit, organized by Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski.
